Dead burned magnesia is used as a reactive ingredient for the production of phosphate cements. The basic characteristics of phosphate cements are; the very short setting times and the early strength development. Typical applications are phosphate cement based repair mortars where the minimum delay and work disruption is of the utmost importance (roads, bridge decks, industrial floors, loading bays, etc.) as well as investment casting, the most important application of which is dental cements. In recent years, a lot of effort has been focused on developing suitable systems for flooring and coating applications as well as for the production of precast construction products. Finally, magnesium phosphate cements are suitable for the hazardous waste stabilization, as an alternative to conventional Portland cement waste encapsulation.
