Grecian Magnesite Expands Calcination Capacity with New Rotary Kiln at Akdeniz

Athens, Greece - June 2025 - Grecian Magnesite S.A. announces the successful commissioning of a new rotary kiln at the Kümbet facilities of its wholly owned Turkish subsidiary, Akdeniz Mineral Kaynaklari A.Ş. (AMK), marking the completion of the expansion plan first announced in June 2023.

The new kiln significantly enhances Akdeniz’s production capabilities, further strengthening the site as a modern, vertically integrated hub for Caustic Calcined Magnesia (CCM) and Dead Burned Magnesia (DBM). Initial production trials successfully confirmed the kiln’s nominal design capacity and operational performance, including:

  • CCM output of approximately >100 metric tons per day, with consistently high chemical reactivity suited for demanding industrial and specialty applications.
  • DBM output reaching approximately >70 metric tons per day, with encouraging initial performance results and ongoing optimization toward high-density DBM products.

As a result, the company’s total calcination capacity in Greece and Türkiye has now reached approximately 720 metric tons per day, significantly enhancing Grecian Magnesite’s operational flexibility, customer responsiveness, and regional supply chain resilience.

The kiln system, featuring a pre-heater, rotary kiln and integrated cooler, was developed and implemented by Grecian Magnesite’s in-house engineering team. The pre-heater efficiently recovers heat from kiln flue gases, improving energy efficiency and reducing fuel consumption. The new unit is fully integrated into Akdeniz’s existing infrastructure, which includes advanced X-ray-based beneficiation lines, modern milling and screening systems, as well as dedicated warehousing and logistics facilities.

The successful commissioning completes a wider multi-year investment program in Türkiye, which included:

  • Exploration and development of new high-quality magnesite deposits
  • Expansion of beneficiation and processing capacity
  • Expansion of downstream processing, packaging and warehousing facilities
  • Upgrades in logistics and quality control systems

This latest milestone enables Grecian Magnesite to further support long-term customer needs across a growing range of industrial applications, including hydrometallurgy, specialty magnesium compounds, marine desulfurization, catalysts, paper bleaching and other high-performance industrial sectors, while also supporting the company’s entry into the high-quality DBM market.

The Kümbet investment further strengthens Grecian Magnesite’s ability to provide geographically diversified, reliable and high-purity magnesia products to international markets. Combined with the company’s operations in Greece, the new facility enhances production flexibility, technical capabilities and long-term supply security for customers worldwide.
