Grecian Magnesite Doubles Sorting Capacity with Second X-ray-based mineral processing line at Yerakini Mines
Athens, Greece -- July 14, 2025 -- Grecian Magnesite is pleased to announce the successful commissioning and start-up of a second X-ray-based mineral processing line at its Yerakini mine site in northern Greece. This strategic investment doubles the company’s magnesite sorting capacity and marks a major step forward in its circular mining approach.
Following the installation of the first XRT line in 2023, the new line further enhances the recovery of high-purity magnesite from the company’s extensive stockpiles of fine Run-of-Mine (RoM) material, an estimated 50 million metric tons accumulated over decades of operation.
“With both lines now operating in parallel, we’re significantly increasing the yield of valuable magnesite from existing resources,” said Pavlos Vayionas, General manager of Grecian Magnesite’s Yerakini Mines & Works. “This directly reduces the need for new extraction, improves energy efficiency, and minimizes our overall environmental footprint.”
Key benefits of the second sorting line include:
- Higher recovery of high-purity magnesite from old RoM stockpiles
- Reduced reliance on new mining activities through efficient resource utilization
- Lower CO₂ emissions per ton of MgO produced
- Enhanced workplace safety and upskilling through automation and digital tools
This second line is part of Grecian Magnesite’s broader investment in smart, sustainable mining solutions, reinforcing its commitment to reducing waste and embracing circularity in magnesite processing.
“We are proud of our teams in Greece and abroad who helped deliver this project on time and to high standards,” added Vayionas. “This milestone strengthens our ability to meet future demand while staying true to our strategic and sustainability goals.”
