Revolutionizing COCapture Technology - The CoCCUS Project has been successfully completed

Athens, 09 January 2024 – The CoCCUS project represents a collaborative initiative towards developing cutting-edge technology for carbon dioxide capture from exhaust gases in energy-intensive industries. The project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund on a mission to develop new CO2 capture methodologies and their utilization in the production of added-value products, focusing on K2CO3 aqueous solution and novel enzymatic catalysts.

The project was launched on September 30, 2021, bringing together a consortium of leading organizations and industrial partners, including the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), Solmeyea, CaO Hellas, HERACLES Group, and Grecian Magnesite. The project was coordinated by the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (Chemical Process and Energy Resources Institute) CERTH/CPERI.

The CO2 capture technology was tested thoroughly throughout the project in laboratory and pilot-scale settings using synthetic exhaust gases and computationally. Additionally, methods for the utilization of captured CO2 were explored. Among other achievements, a new enzyme with high-temperature resistance acting as a catalyst in the capture reactions was discovered. The estimated cost of CO2 capture is approximately €30-50/ton and could be further reduced through the utilization of existing heat streams.

As a member of the CoCCUS consortium, we are proud to see this project successfully completed! We celebrate, as much as we anticipate, its’ profound impact on reshaping the landscape of carbon capture technologies. We congratulate all participants and collaborators for their dedication to this unique achievement that marks a significant stride toward a more sustainable future.
